There are few capital cities quite like Stockholm, which spreads itself out over an archipelago of 14 islands in the Baltic Sea. The jewel in Sweden’s crown is famous for its effortlessly elegant architecture and sense of style, as well as its cultural riches in the form of museums, galleries and more. Walk amongst history in the charming Old Town, Gamla Stan, which is one of the most faithfully preserved medieval centres in all of Europe. Spend an afternoon wandering amongst quaint boutiques and cafes, as well as the Stockholm Cathedral and Nobel Museum. On one of our Stockholm cruises, don’t miss the world’s first open-air museum – Skansen. Featuring traditional houses, wildlife and staff in period costume, it aims to reproduce the Sweden of the past in miniature. This city may have a strong sense of historical heritage, but it also hurtles forward into the future, as evidenced by its many ultra-cool, contemporary neighbourhoods. Södermalm is Stockholm’s south island, and offers a delightfully eclectic mix of vintage shops, creative hubs and music venues. Elsewhere in the city you’ll find Gröna Lund, a lively theme park filled with rides and sometimes concerts. For those who like their museums specific, there’s plenty on offer: from the dedicated ABBA exhibit to the Vasa Museum, which centres around a once sunken Viking warship.
