Charming Vigo is the largest city in Galicia, a lush region on the northwest coast of Spain. As well as being home to the biggest fishing fleet in Europe, it’s famous for being the main connection to the Cíes Islands, which are just a short boat journey away. This mysterious archipelago is a dedicated Nature Reserve, and their sandy beaches mean they’re also known as the “Galician Seychelles”. Secluded and with a distinctly tropical vibe, the Cíes Islands are the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Back in Vigo, spend your days lounging on the beach. You have plenty to choose from, including Praia de Samil with its lively promenade and Playa del Vao with its Caribbean-esque white sand. Learn more about the city and Galicia at the Museo del Mar, which chronicles Vigo’s maritime history, or explore local art at the Museum of Contemporary Art, which often features fascinating rotating exhibitions. Other unmissable sites to make time for on Vigo cruises include the grand Rande Bridge and the Castro Fortress. Dating back to the 17th century, this impressive hilltop castle once protected Vigo from British Royal Navy raids. Spend a windy day exploring, as well as enjoying the scenic views from the top.
