Greece highlights: ancient history, beautiful islands, relaxed atmosphere

Whether you’re exploring the historic monuments of the mainland or relaxing on an island beach, a Greece and Greek Islands cruise is an unforgettable experience. Positioned on the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa, this overseas paradise is the perfect destination for holiday escapes of all types.

Providing the ideal blend of history, culture and picture-perfect landscapes, Greece and its islands boast a true ‘something for everyone’ vibe, all of which can be experienced with our Mediterranean cruise deals. We’ll help you experience Greece’s incredible highlights, from the ancient Acropolis of Athens to the stunning sights of Santorini, with plenty in between.

If your cruise planning has started with visions of Greek Gods and historic ruins, then Athens is a perfect port of call. Explore Greece’s long past at Hadrian’s Arch, the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Acropolis Museum, then browse the Plaka district to shop for souvenirs and dine in traditional Greek restaurants and cafes.

Away from the capital, the many islands offer a different take on Greek life - a relaxed ambiance, brimming with bright colours and exceptional food and drink. There’s nothing quite like the fresh taste of Greek cuisine as you look out from the 895ft high panoramic view from Fira, the capital of Santorini. This stunning town breaks through the volcanic landscape with its instantly recognisable white-washed buildings and blue domed rooftops while the black, volcanic sand on its beaches adds yet another visual display for your journey across the islands.

Expect more breath-taking views of rich green land and seemingly endless seas from the likes of Rhodes, Corfu and Katakolon, all of which come with their own unique charm. Katakolon, for example, may be one of the lesser-known islands, but it’s a gateway to one of the most historic Greek landmarks: ancient Olympia! Then there’s Mykonos, an island renowned for its exciting nightlife, which is also bursting with sights to see in the sunlight, including traditional white-washed houses and famous Venetian windmills.

An essential part of any European cruise, exploring the Greek Islands with Celebrity Cruises will enable you to visit unforgettable ports, sample amazing food and understand exactly why Greece is still so popular with holidaymakers of all types.

Greece FAQS

Answering your questions about Greece

The Greek islands tick all those summer holiday boxes: idyllic beaches and sparkling seas? Check. Sun-kissed climate? Definitely. Waterfront tavernas serving delicious local cuisine? Every few paces. From the peaceful and laidback feel of Santorini and Mykonos to the historic city of Athens, Greece is also one of the most diverse destinations we visit.

  • Mykonos windmills – These hilltop, whitewashed windmills are perhaps the island of Mykonos’ most famous feature. In fact, you can see them from everywhere on the island.
  • Santorini caldera – This dramatic caldera was formed over 3,600 years ago during the Minoan civilization. Sunsets over the caldera are distinctive and epic.
  • The Acropolis, Athens – Athens is packed full of historically significant sites, but the Acropolis is perhaps the most famous. This ancient citadel perches on a hilltop overlooking the city.
  • Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes, Rhodes – On the island of Rhodes, you’ll find this 14th century castle, which also houses a museum.
  • Corfu – Serene Corfu is the perfect place to relax and unwind on your Greek cruise. Don’t miss Myrtiotissa Beach or the Palaio Frourio.

We cruise to Greece during the spring and summer months, when the weather is drier. Temperatures in the spring hover around 19 degrees, and there aren’t as many tourists – ideal if you prefer to explore a destination when it’s a little quieter. In high summer (July and August) temperatures reach around 30 degrees.

Stay cool in the Greek heat by packing light cotton clothing, such as shorts, vests and T-shirts. Layers are a good idea in shoulder seasons, as mornings and evenings can be cooler. You should also bring swimwear and sun cream, as well as walking boots if you’re looking to do some hiking. Find out more about what to pack on your Celebrity cruise.
