When you imagine the Caribbean, you might picture swaying palms, endless blue skies, and yes, you guessed it – miles and miles of postcard-worthy beaches. But what with the sheer number of beaches to choose from in the Caribbean reaching somewhere in the thousands, how do you ensure you’re visiting the very best, and how do you know which is most suited to your holiday?
Here at Celebrity Cruises, we’ve put together this handy guide to some of our favourite spots in this sun-soaked destination; from the top place for sunbathing, to the most ideal beach for thrill-seekers. Just don’t forget your sun-cream.
On a Caribbean cruise with us, we’ll take you sailing to the tropical paradise of Grenada. Grand Anse is one of the highlights, offering over two miles of pure white sand and a scenic backdrop of grape trees and palms. You’ll find it on the southwest coast of the island, and so it’s easily accessible from where we make port in the nearby capital of St. Georges (especially useful when you have little ones in tow). The beach itself is lined by lively restaurants and cafes for those all-important refreshments throughout the day.
If anyone in your family is feeling adventurous, why not try some snorkelling among the colourful reefs? Younger ones might enjoy a tour on a glass bottom boat to discover the darting shoals of fish and a hidden underwater world.
When you’ve had your fill of sandy fun, head to nearby Grand Etang Forest Reserve for a taste of the mysterious Caribbean rainforest. Short and gentle hiking trails are perfect for all the family, and you might even see nesting turtles in high summer.
Had enough of sun-worshipping? Head to Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman. This photogenic hotspot is widely recognised as the “best beach in the Caribbean”, and there is so much is on offer here. Situated on the western edge of the island, don’t led the name mislead you – this beach is actually made up of 5.5 miles of crystal clear water and beautiful white sand.
If you’re feeling active, try your hand at water-sports – sailing on a catamaran, stand-up paddle-boarding, snorkelling and kite-surfing are all popular options. You’ll often be able to see the locals getting competitive during a game of volleyball – why not get involved? Alternatively, head to nearby Stingray City to get up close and personal with these fascinating creatures, or go diving in Cemetery Reef – which, with its giant porous coral and diversity of fish species, is one of the best places for underwater adventures in the Caribbean.
If it’s seclusion you’re looking for on your Caribbean cruise, it could only be Eagle Beach in Aruba. It’s the widest on the island, and also recently won the accolade of 3rd best beach in the world. We think that may have something to do with the sparkling waters, private picnic areas, or perhaps just the deliciously warm white sand underfoot.
During the day, admire the views out over the ocean as you relax and unwind. While Eagle Beach is a favourite among tourists and locals alike, the size of the beach may just make you feel like you’re on a deserted island (just with the convenience of shops and bars nearby). Then, by sunset, an unusual spectacle begins to unfurl. During certain months of the year, the eggs of four different species of turtles begin to hatch. Watching the new hatchlings as they make their way to the water for the very first time is one of the most unique and unforgettable moments of any Caribbean cruise.
When you want to get that perfect Instagram shot, you’re spoilt for choice in the Caribbean – but Nassau in the Caribbean is one of our all-time favourite subjects. If it’s those envy-inducing, postcard-perfect shots you’re after, Nassau ticks all the boxes: a turquoise ocean reaching out to the horizon, vibrant green palms, and pristine sand. However, it also offers some quirky, lesser-known details to capture. Check out the Blue Hole – a 200ft deep hollow, which is home to huge numbers of colourful fish and rare marine life. Or, head to the Piece Of Cake cave to capture a shot of you swimming through the large opening, or get snapping any one of the many shipwrecks surrounding the island’s reefs.
If you’ve got an underwater camera, definitely check out the diving here at Nassau – underwater visibility ranges up to a whopping 100 feet.
