Prepare to be dazzled by the many colours of Bridgetown: the lemon yellow of its colonial buildings, the deep jade of its waves and the soaring azure of its skies. As the capital of Caribbean island, Barbados, it enjoys a lively atmosphere. Soak it up by taking a wander through the centre of town, stopping to check out National Heroes Square which sits right at the centre. It commemorates ten of the most influential Bajan people in history. Close-by, you’ll find the city’s parliament buildings, which have a striking, neo-Gothic architectural style. There’s a museum inside where you can learn about the island’s political history. Don’t miss Carlisle Bay on Bridgetown cruises: a short drive from Bridgetown, this natural harbour also features a marine park, making it perfect for donning your scuba mask and exploring. Back in town, you’ll find the famous horse-racing venue, the Garrison Savannah Racetrack, which has stood here since 1845. After having a wander around, pick up some traditional Barbadian cuisine: we’d recommend the national dish, cou cou and flying fish, or pickled pork and sweet potatoes. Wash everything down with a sweet and spicy glass of rum punch. Fancy taking some home with you? Pay a visit to the Mount Gay Rum Distilleries.
