Antarctica FAQs

Answering your questions about Antarctica.

Have questions about your first cruise to the Antarctic? From what to pack to what time zone the continent is in, we answer some of our most frequently asked questions.

Antarctica is one of the last unspoilt destinations on earth.  Losing yourself in this magical world that sparkles with ice is a sure-fire way to leave the everyday behind. Glide through narrow channels book-ended by majestic icebergs and spot rare wildlife from the comfort of your ship.

In the warmer months between November and March, the ice melts and creates channels for ships to pass through. A cruise is the best way to access some of the most remote and mysterious places on earth.

In Antarctica, you can follow in the footsteps of Ernest Shackleton on Elephant Island, watch leopard seals frolic in Dalhan Bay and admire the jaw-dropping Petzvol Glacier.

Even in the warmer months, temperatures can hover around zero, so pack plenty of warm clothing such as a high-quality parka, base layers and waterproof boots. Hats, gloves, scarves and other cosy items are also a good idea. Bring along some smarter clothes to wear in the evening, and sun cream, as the sunlight can be intense. Of course, don't forget your camera.

At Antarctica’s South Pole, the Earth’s longitudes meet, so any of the world’s time zones can be used there. As Antarctica is often accessed by New Zealand, the Amundsen-Scott observes New Zealand Standard Time (NZST).

Antarctica is largely uninhabited, so during your cruise, you'll have the opportunity to try all of our speciality restaurants onboard.

Antarctica is generally considered a safe place to visit.

A wide variety of languages are spoken in Antarctica, and this can vary between research stations. Languages include English, Russian, Chinese, French and German.

WHEN TO VISIT ANTARCTICA

Best time to visit Antarctica, with Celebrity Cruises.

When you visit Antarctica depends on the experience you want to have and the wildlife you'd like to see. Generally speaking, though, the best months to visit the southernmost continent are November to March. During this time, the sun appears over the horizon and melts the ice to allow good access. The temperatures also crest over freezing, making it a much more enjoyable time to cruise.

Between November and March, you can also expect to see gargantuan icebergs, penguin chicks, seal pups, whales and breeding elephant seals.
